Uncommon
A series exploring real collectors with uncommon obsessions for specific collectibles.
Background
In everyday life, the uncommon is typically ignored. In collecting, it's “commons” that are worthless and the uncommon cards and collections that are rare and valuable. The people behind the world’s most coveted collection are unique characters, with uncommon obsessions. Still, whether it’s Topps Baseball or Pokémon, they all have one thing in common — they build their collections with eBay.
What we did
Journeyed into the homes and minds of iconic collectors from an MLB pitcher turned HOF autograph seeker, to a Garbage Pail Kid fanatic who became a global street artist. Each installment explored an uncommon obsession for cards and how they used eBay to build some of the most iconic collections in the world.
Buff Monster
Buff Monster began as an avid Garbage Pail Kids collector but turned his love for the art and characters into a career as a street artist with murals of his “Melty Misfits” painted around the world. He opened up his Brooklyn studio for a look at his world-class GPK collection and a preview of an exclusive collab with eBay.
Pat Neshek
MLB pitcher and All-Star collector, Pat Neshek, gave fans an inside-look at his signature collection containing more than 50,000 signed baseball cards. Neshek detailed his ongoing quest for a complete 1970 Topps set, and featured some of the all-time greats in his collection, like childhood hero Kirby Puckett, Reggie Jackson and Hank Aaron.
