Luxury Exchange

A retail experiment where shoppers trade one luxury item for another.

Background

Today’s Gen Z and millennial audiences have limited funds but expensive taste. They’re primed to enjoy buying and selling pre-loved goods, but don’t know the value of the luxury items in their closets. eBay showed people what their “closet currency” is worth, opening a retail experiment where shoppers trade one luxury item for another.

What we did

The Luxury Exchange was a first-of-its-kind retail experiment by eBay where authentic luxury items were treated as legal tender. Shoppers brought in their “closet currency,” had these items appraised, then exchanged them for handbags, watches, or jewelry in real time. Designed to drive consideration at every step, guests walked away with a coveted new-to-them luxury item, a first-hand look at eBay's unmatched inventory, and a clear breakdown of Authenticity Guarantee. This retail experience opened in the heart of NYC’s Diamond District and solidified eBay as THE go-to platform for pre-loved luxury.
